My sense of America is it’s a place where everyone believes in equality of opportunity. And hopefully, that’s then going to motivate political change that will lead to better opportunities for all. What we did was we were able to then link in data on test scores for these kids when they were in third grade and look at math test scores. Algebra I isn’t the first step toward math success — students begin exploring algebraic reasoning in kindergarten (and, ideally, even in preschool). Important concepts are much easier to understand when you see them in action. Comparing and contrasting nonfiction stories is an important skill for fourth and fifth graders. I still view it as my job to anybody who is interested in listening. For middle schoolers and their parents, the message is clear: it’s easier to learn the math now than it is to try to learn — or relearn — it later. And so what we’re trying to do is basically create more integration, where you have more low-income families living in basically mixed-income neighborhoods, reduce the amount of segregation in American cities. When we think about the short run — who’s employed right now in the Covid crisis and so forth — of course, we’re focusing on adults. And you’ll get new ones delivered directly to you. This upbeat song makes you want to sing along as you count by fives. Why do the many parts of the body interact with each other? How do you use data to talk about social capital? There’s been a bill to do this kind of pilot in many other cities across the US. And so now there’s bipartisan support in Congress for expanding this sort of approach. You see a very similar pattern by race and ethnicity. Then cover up “net” so they can read “cab-i”. And in a nutshell, what we basically find happened in the past six months is that high-income folks started to spend a lot less, like 30% less, billions of dollars less per day, primarily because of health concerns. I think for too long in social science and in policy-making, we have looked at broad-brush kind of answers, which are we need to raise taxes and we need to broadly fund schools more. It’s helping drive how Bill Gates spends his billions of dollars of philanthropy or how President-elect Joe Biden crafts his pandemic economic recovery plan. But what this longitudinal look is showing you is that growth has not benefited the lower-income and middle-income kids who were growing up in Charlotte. How are you able to determine that in a data way, in a way that you can articulate that besides anecdotally? It’s largely about opportunity. Every extra dose you get of that better environment, the more it helps you. So a phenomenon that I’ve been interested in studying for some time and that has been discussed, for instance, in books by Bob Putnam, my colleague at Harvard, on the decline of social capital is this notion that America is kind of coming apart, that we’re not a very integrated society anymore. And entering college without an understanding of algebra means students are less likely to complete a college-level math course, which can take them off track for graduation. Your body would not work if the systems did not work together. However, the progression of the units is at the discretion of districts. In other words, how late is too late to cure inequality? I’m not a professor. And so then naturally, there are two questions one might ask. And that seems like it will foster more upward mobility. So if women grew up in areas where there are lots of women innovating in a particular field, they’re more likely to have a patent in that field. So in Covid, we’re using data from a bunch of different private companies to track what’s happening to various key outcomes— spending, employment levels, business activity, and so forth. Exactly, or specific sectors, right? But what we’ve started to learn over time is that the details of how programs are implemented, the exact end-line kind of service delivery matters a ton. important, and it will help him learn about the world around him. Remember, we want children to develop a love of reading, so focus on finding books they want to read. There is kind of a firewall between we are broadly supporting research on equality of opportunity, but we’re not, per se, going to, say, use our data or focus on a certain set of topics or results. And we were able to track 1 million people who went on to become inventors in relation to their parental income origins and so forth. However, it is only a first step and vital that students get to understand what they are reading. 2. To see if your child is learning what she should know in her grade level, you can read about the math expectations for your child in kindergarten, first grade, second grade, third grade, fourth grade, fifth grade, sixth grade, seventh grade, and eighth grade under Common Core or check the NCTM’s guide for algebra standards. One of the most important things that you can do to make your young child feel safe is to establish as much routine in his life as possible. So we have some work that we’re doing now with social network data, trying to understand how people are connecting with each other. One important set of factors that I had not necessarily anticipated as an economist, but I’m increasingly convinced are quite important, are this idea of social cohesion going back to the Putnam social capital sort of idea, that it’s about who you’re connected to. Is it higher taxes, less reliance on property taxes, more funding of people’s ideas? And everyone I know in Silicon Valley thinks they made it themselves. It’s not even about differences across cities. Are homework assignments corrected and returned in a timely way? So on the first point, we’ve looked at lots of different factors that might predict these differences in opportunity across areas. You’ll get episodes every Monday and Thursday. But Harvard economist Raj Chetty says that’s the age at which America’s “Einsteins” are identified — and lost. Depending on which school you attend, A is either equal to 4, or is equal to a multiple of 4 (e.g. [MUSIC PLAYING] Big data tends to get a bad rap, and it often deserves it. By matching what is taught in the classroom to the standards in each subject area, students (and their parents and teachers) will know what teachers should be teaching, what students should be learning and what they will be tested on. My view is that, of course, people had to do hard work on their own to get to where they are, but they did that within a framework of opportunity that made those possibilities achievable for them, right? It's essential for calculations like tripling recipes, planning travel times/mileage, or finding square footage. And you can see very precisely that after April 3, that when this program went into effect, employment did start to go up a little bit at the smaller firms relative to the larger firms by about 2 percentage points. So you can get data on who had a patent in the U.S., which is a proxy for whether you invented something, of course. It’s not like you just have to be there when you’re five years old or seven years old. How do you improve things in early childhood? If you were in a good neighborhood until age seven but then moved to a lower-opportunity area, we actually see kids’ outcomes get significantly worse. So I would draw a fundamental distinction between equality of opportunity and equality of outcomes. The U.S. is no longer a land where it’s easy to get ahead. They still haven’t passed one. We’re just kind of changing it on the margins. Here, I think there’s no other answer than systematically trying to understand program by program which things are working and which things are not. What was really striking to us is you can find lots of places that are opportunity bargains in the sense that they are equally affordable to where lots of low-income families are currently living, yet produce much better outcomes. And do you need social media data? I increasingly think, based on many pieces of evidence, that if you’re around people who can connect you to opportunity, people who might be able to tell you about how to apply to college or essentially just change your aspirations — for many kids, even going to college or aspiring to be a journalist or a scientist, that just might not even be on the radar screen.
